James A. Ritter
Professor
Professor Ritter’s research interests lie in the areas of separation processes, materials science and energy storage. His emphasis in these areas has always been to gain a fundamental understanding of the underlying and controlling scientific phenomena, through carefully planned and executed theoretical analysis, mathematical modeling and experimentation, to be able to apply the first principles knowledge gained to better engineer a process, system or material for a specific application. Specifically, Professor Ritter and his research group, which is currently comprised of one Research Assistant Professor (Dr. Armin D. Ebner), two Postdoctoral Associates (Drs. Sarang A. Gadre and Tanya Prozorov), six Ph.D. students (4 full-time and 1 part-time at USC, and 1 part time at NASA MSFC) and four UG students are carrying out funded research projects in three key areas: 1) nanostructured complex hydride materials for hydrogen storage, and high temperature hydrotalcite like adsorbents for carbon dioxide sequestration; 2) novel pressure swing adsorption cycles for gas separation and purification, and metal hydride hydrogen storage systems design and development; and 3) magnetic field-enhanced processes for targeted drug delivery and separations. In these areas, Professor Ritter and his research group published 8 peer-reviewed articles in 2002, 6 in 2003; he has 6 in press in 2004, and 9 under review. He also has 1 patent application pending in the area of hydrogen storage materials, 2 provisional patents filed in the area of magnetic drug targeting, and 2 provisional patents filed in the area of new cyclic adsorption processes.
