| “The opportunities that I would have at the University of South Carolina would be more important than just being a name and number somewhere else like at Stanford or Northwestern. I think that was the draw and I was very fortunate to be able to have that vision and see, because I've had had those opportunities and they've been very good to me.” -- Sam Deutsch, chemical engineering graduate student, 2001-2006 More |

Graduate Students
A graduate degree from the University of South Carolina's College of Engineering and Computing opens many career doors.
Among the many opportunities given to our graduate students we offer APOGEE, a distance education program designed to meet the needs of busy professionals by providing flexible course delivery, and membership in the Student Chapter of the American Society of Engineering Education.
Awards and Fellowships
Our students are consistently garnering awards and fellowships, such as the following:
- Student wins NSF Graduate Research Fellowship: Kathryn C. Johnson, a graduating Chemical Engineering student and a member of the SC Honors College has been awarded a 2007 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The fellowship provides a stipend of $30,000 per year for full-time graduate students as well as other benefits, totaling at $121,500. Joseph Turner, a Computer Science graduate, was selected for Honorable Mention.
- USC Graduate Student Day 2007award winners...
Engineering and Physical Sciences category: First prize: Scott Greenway of Chemical Engineering, PEM Fuel Cell Electrode Structure Analysis Using EIS; Second prize: Michael Martinez of Chemical Engineering, Modeling of the Water Phase Distribution in the Gas Diffusion Layer of a PEMFC Cathode; Third prize: Attilio Siani of Chemical Engineering, SiO2-Supported PtFe Cluster-Derived Catalysts
Language, Media, and Information Technology category: Third prize: Chekuri Choudary of Computer Science and Engineering, Summarization of Visual Content in Instructional Videos
Scholarly Poster (Physical Sciences) category: First prize: Karen Uffalussy of Chemical Engineering, Kinetic Characterization of Multimetallic Cluster-Derived Catalysts Used for Selective Hydrogenation of Citral
- USC announces three NSF Graduate Research Fellowship winners: Matt Elder, computer science and mathematics, Stacey Ivol, computer engineering, and Jason Owens, chemical engineering and mathematics
- D. Jason Owens, chemical engineering, was awarded an NSF Graduate Fellowship and a Tau Beta Pi Graduate Fellowship.
Student Organizations
Our graduate students are given the opportunity to participate in various student organizations. Bonds formed by membership in these organizations last well after the college experience is complete.
- American Nuclear Society. E-mail
- Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Organization's mission is to engender a sense of community among graduate students within the department and facilitate communications with regional industrial contacts. Advisor: Harry Ploehn. E-mail
- Graduate Student Association, open to all USC graduate students, provides means for the holistic development of graduate students through responsible, active, and effective graduate student participation in the planning and conduct of the University and graduate student affairs.
- Black Graduate Student Association, open to all graduate students, fosters a sense of community among Black Graduate Students. E-mail
Scholarships
CEC provides many scholarship and fellowship opportunities for our graduate students. Among these are:
- Chemical Engineering Department Graduate Student Fellowship for students in their last semester of Ph.D. or MS program.
- T.Y. Chu Scholarship awarded to a graduate student who is majoring in Civil Engineering with an interest in soil mechanics.
