Rising Mechanical Engineering student, Devon Berry, receives NASA award

A rising senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Devon Berry, has received the 2007-2008 Kathy D. Sullivan Science and Engineering Fellowship by NASA for the State of South Carolina.  She is a member of the South Carolina Honors College.

In addition to the $7,000 scholarship, Berry will be traveling to NASA Langley and working with NASA investigators throughout this summer. Under the direction of NASA scientists, Berry and her research advisor and mentor, Professor Michael Sutton in USC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, will focus on aerospace research related to fracture of novel material systems.

Professor Sutton commented on this achievement. “Ms. Berry will be working with NASA scientists to create a reliable fracture database for modern aerospace materials. The database is essential for validation of advanced simulation tools developed at USC and now being used by NASA, the USAF and industries such as Lockheed Martin. This is truly a unique opportunity for Ms. Berry, and we are delighted that she will be an active and important contributor to the research effort.”

At USC, Berry is a member of Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society, Pi Tau Sigma National Mechanical Engineering Honor Fraternity, Chi Omega Sorority, Omicron

Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Mortar Board, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Berry is also a recipient of the National Academic of Nuclear Training Scholarship, Sorority Council Scholarship, McKissick Scholarship and the Frank B. Herty Scholarship. The daughter of Dawn Berry and Jack Berry, both of Charlotte, NC, she is a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, NC.
