Mechanical Engineering undergraduate student wins Hillquist SAE Scholarship

Crystal Byrd

Crystal Byrd, a junior in Mechanical Engineering, is the recent recipient of the Ralph K. Hillquist Honorary SAE Scholarship.

The Hillquist scholarship, a $1,000 non-renewable scholarship awarded every other year at the SAE Noise & Vibration Conference, was established in 2005 to honor Ralph K. Hillquist, a retiree from General Motors Proving Grounds, and is funded by the SAE Noise & Vibration Conference and related activities. Hillquist is the founder of the Conference, and serves on its General Committee.

Applicants for the Hillquist scholarship must be US citizens enrolled full-time as a junior at a university within the US. They must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA with significant academic and leadership achievements. The student must also have declared a major in either mechanical engineering or an automotive-related engineering discipline - preference is given to those individuals with studies/courses in the areas of expertise related to noise and vibration (i.e., statics, dynamics, physics, or vibration).

Selection, administered by the SAE Scholarship Committee, judges applications on academic performance and leadership activities, with additional consideration given for special study or honors in the field of the award.

Crystal was presented the scholarship at the Noise & Vibration conference held May 15-17, 2007 at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL where she attended with free "VIP" guest passes courtesy of SAE International/Hillquist scholarship. Says, Jeffrey Morehouse, USC SAE Advisor, "That's beyond cool! Congratulations, Crystal!"
