"I have every reason to be optimistic about the future growth and success of this Department, given the energy and enthusiasm of both more senior and new faculty members and the healthy statistics in terms of student enrollments and research productivity," said Dr. Michael D. Amiridis, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. "Jamil has served the Department well from the Interim position and I am looking forward to continuing working with him.”
Khan, a Licensed Professional Engineer in South Carolina, received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University in 1988. He has been a faculty member in Carolina’s Mechanical Engineering department since 1990. His research interests include heat transfer during manufacturing processes, heat transfer and fluid flow with phase change (solidification/melting in casting, welding), computational and experimental fluid dynamics related to contaminants transport in rooms, heat transfer in porous media (micro-channel heat transfer), and environmentally conscious manufacturing/re-manufacturing.
An active and well-respected member of the Mechanical Engineering community, Khan counts among his achievements Finalist for the Mungo Graduate Teaching Award in 2002; Litman Teaching Award, College of Engineering [now known as the College of Engineering and Computing], in 1999 (this is the highest teaching award of the College, awarded to one faculty member per year); the Mungo Teaching Award (University-wide teaching award) in 1996; Professor of the Year, Pi Tau Sigma (Mechanical Engineering Honors Society) in 1996; Teacher of the Year, National Society of Black Engineers, in 1993; and Best Teacher of the Year, National Society of Black Engineers, in 1994.
