Meet the New Face of Engineering and Computing:
Dylan Stankus

Hometown: North Augusta, SC
Major: Environmental engineering
High School: North Augusta High School

As an aspiring Environmental Engineer, Dylan Stankus believes it is important to understand chemical and biological concepts that influence and impact engineering design and has dedicated much effort towards attaining a broad education by minoring in chemistry, working at Shealy Environmental Services (an environmental testing facility), and reading literature about aspects of plant biology, treatment wetlands, etc.

Since September 2005, Dylan has worked in Dr. Lászlo Márton’s Biology Laboratory performing research on mass propagation and the enhancement of plants for phytoremediation. He is currently working on a project studying 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol degradation by Arundo donax (a wetland grass) in hydroponic cultures.

Additionally, Dylan is assisting in the design of a constructed wetland for the treatment of agricultural runoff at SoSun, a company partnered with Márton’s lab. He also works for Schnabel Engineering, an Enviromental / Geotechnical firm as a co-op. Plus, Dylan has worked as a TA for Dr. Flora educating 8th to 12th graders about environmental and water resources engineering and will be a TA again this fall for a new introductory course about the different aspects of civil engineernig.

Dylan is a current recipient of the Magellan Scholar Fellowship and has been listed on the Deans Honor List every semester from Spring 2005-Spring 2007.

A 21-year-old senior in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program at USC, Dylan plans to attend graduate school to receive a Ph.D in Environmental Engineering during which he wants to study contaminant fate and transport in the environment. After graduation, he wants to be a college professor and apply environmental models to the development of new remediation systems.
