Hometown: Newberry, SC
Major: Civil Engineering
High School: Newberry High School
Koty Bagwell is a 21 year old senior graduating this May. Originally a mathematics major, just two weeks before she was supposed to start her freshman year, she chose to switch her major to Civil Engineering because of its complex nature and its mathematical appeal. She knew that she would never tire of such a career because it constantly changes with new discoveries and there are always new things to learn.
Koty originally chose to attend the University of South Carolina’s College of Engineering and Computing because her sister, who is a year ahead of her in school, recommended it to her as her sister was a student attending USC majoring in Chemical Engineering. As it turns out, not only was she pleased with the Civil Engineering program offered at USC but she was also impressed with the professors that were chosen to teach at our higher learning institution. Her professors are not only helpful and knowledgeable about engineering, but they understand how hard it is to be an engineering student. They get to know each of their students personally. Koty loves the fact that if she haa a family/medical emergency, her professors will be a bit more lenient on her when it comes to finishing her assignments for that week.
Koty has been working in the field of site development for two years now at U.S. Group, Inc. Throughout her college career she has worked full-time for two summers, and part-time for two consecutive school years. She recently passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and has accepted a full time position at U.S. Group, Inc. as an Engineer in Training.
Currently, Koty is the president of the American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter, and she hopes to continue her involvement with such a prestigious professional society as a USC graduate. Although with a boyfriend, a part-time job, being ASCE president, and the many other things she has tried to juggle during her college career, Koty has managed to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.9 and hopes that she will end her college career with such an impressive GPA.
Koty plans to work full-time at US. Group, Inc., but hopes to one day (two or three years from the time she graduates) to come back and either get her Masters in Engineering or go to law school.
