Why are the words "[POTENTIAL SPAM]" or "[QUARANTINE]" are in the subject of an e-mail?

This is because the Barracuda has recognized some part of an e-mail as spam. For example, if the word "Mortgage" appears in an e-mail, the Barracuda firewall will give it a spam score. The more certain words appear in an e-mail, the higher the spam score. An example of what this can look like to the user is below. If an e-mail gets a moderate spam score, the Barracuda tags that E-mail by placing the words "[POTENTIAL SPAM]" in the subject. If an e-mail gets a high spam score, the Barracuda tags that E-mail by placing the words "[QUARANTINE]" in the subject.

How can I enable quarantining on the Barracuda so that spam does not go to my CEC inbox?

  • Click on preferences. Then click on "Quarantine Settings".
  • Click the "Yes" radio button as show in the picture below.

I have checked the "daily" notification for getting a message about stuff that has been filtered, but I have never gotten a message. Is this because I have not gotten enough spam yet (only a handful)? Or does it only deal with "quarantine" eimail?

The notifications only warn you about stuff sitting in your personal quarantine box on the Barracuda spam filter.

Explain the "Outlook Plugin"

In short, the Outlook Plugin allows CEC mail users to classify what they believe is spam and train their own personal spam filter (I.E. Bayesian Filter). For most users, the global Bayesian spam filter is sufficient. For more information, click here.

To Install the "Outlook Plugin"

  • Click "Download Now"
  • Click download and save outlook_plugin.msi to your desktop. Double click outlook_plugin.msi to install the client. YOU MUST BE AN ADMINISTRATOR to do this. Contact your IT manager for help installing software.
  • Click Next, Next, and Finish.

Once the plugin is installed, you should see the following picture in your outlook toolbar:

Note. To classify something as spam, click If it is not spam, click . This is how you train your Bayesian Filter. It requires you to classify 200 things as spam and 200 things as not spam before it becomes active. It works more efficiently if more things are marked not spam, than spam.

I'm expecting an e-mail, and the sender tells me it was blocked. How do I correct this?

Contact helpdesk at engr.sc.edu for help with this. BE SURE to do this quickly because the Barracuda holds blocked\quarantined e-mails for a limited amount of time based on how much disk space it has. Please send your e-mail address, the email address of the sender, and the approximate time and date the e-mail was sent.

I'm still getting spam that isn't getting marked. What do I do?

By using your Outlook Plugin, you can train the Barracuda to better recognize spam. It is recommended that you classify all your unsolicited commercial e-mail as spam. Should you receive spam, use your Outlook Plugin to train the Barracuda.
