Local Resources
If you're coming from out of town, you'll probably be wondering a few things about Columbia. Little things, we're sure, like where to get a bite to eat around town, or find more robot materials, or maybe catch a movie on Saturday night to unwind after three days of stress. We've compiled a few places you might find handy, complete with Google maps if we can't describe it easily. Think something needs to get added? Contact the webmaster, Billfred Leverette, at leveretw at engr.sc.edu.
Food Around USC
- Wendy's: Go up Greene Street, between the Koger Center and the Carolina Coliseum, and cross Assembly Street. Wendy's is the nearest restaurant to the venue, and tends to get utterly packed around lunchtime between the regular traffic and the added rush of the teams.
- Subway: Go to Wendy's, but go to your left for the rest of the block to the Shell station. The Subway is inside.
- Sonic: Cut across the parking lots at the Colonial Center to the foot bridge on the far end of the lots. This will get you across Blossom Street to the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. Walk past the front entry to get to Assembly Street. Keep going away from the Colonial Center on that side of Assembly, and you'll reach Sonic. (Or, by car, take Greene to Assembly and turn right.) This particular Sonic is known for tremendously slow service among college students, but it is open 24 hours.
- Domino's Pizza: Cross Greene St., then make a right at Assembly. You're going to go past half of the Carolina Coliseum before hitting Devine Street, which is noted by a break in the decorative fence.
- Beezer's (subs): Go up Greene (don't cross Greene) to Sumter Street, then go left for a block and a half. Beezer's is the late-night destination for many a college student, and has pretty fast service. What they don't have, however, is much space for a team to eat -- we advise taking your food across the street to the USC Horseshoe, spreading out, and enjoying fresh air. They also deliver, with the minimum depending on what part of town you're in.
- The Russell House: Cross Greene, then go straight on it for about four blocks. The Russell House is USC's student union, which contains a Burger King, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, as well as a few house-brand eateries. (The webmaster is biased towards Horseshoe Deli on the first floor, which is open Monday-Friday.)
- The Vista: Location to many different types of eateries from sit-down, like Carolina Wings, Wild Wing Café, and IHoP, to quick bite/drive-thru/take-out like McDonald's, Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches and newly-opened Five Guys Burgers. If you have a sweet-tooth, there's also a Marble Slab Ice Cream parlor and Nonnah's has the best desserts in town.
