End-of-Course Assessment Administrative Regulations

To ensure the quality, consistency and integrity of the testing process, PLTW has developed the following regulations regarding the PLTW end-of-course assessments. All school personnel who are involved in the downloading, duplication, or administration of the tests are requested to follow all guidelines.

  • The end-of-course assessments are published on the Registered Teacher’s Page of the PLTW website twice during the school year; once in the fall for schools that are on an accelerated semester block and again in the spring for schools that operate on an annual calendar. Only schools that are scheduled to administer the assessments at the time they are published should download them from the website. Due to the proprietary nature of these exams, any school not administering the assessments at the time they are published should not download them for use as practice exams for students. Only tests designated as Practice Exams on the Registered Teacher’s section of the PLTW website may be used as such.
  • The end-of-course assessments should be downloaded and stored in a secure location, in a manner similar to the handling of national standardized tests, no more than one (1) week prior to administering the exam to students. To ensure the integrity of the tests, teachers are requested not to use these tests to coach students’ performance on the assessments.
  • All completed exams must be collected and held by the PLTW teacher for a period of (1) year. Because of the flexibility in the dates for administering PLTW tests, exams must not be returned to or be reviewed by students. In addition, the original tests may be called in and reviewed for quality and consistency in grading responses.
  • The end-of-course assessments must be administered during the dates specified for each exam.

Semester Schools: In schools which teach PLTW courses on an accelerated semester block (20 weeks), students must take the assessment, published for the semester, during the testing period for that course. For example, students who complete a course in the fall
semester would take the fall end-of-course assessment and would not wait to take the spring assessment if the same course is offered during the spring semester. These schools may not delay the administration of the fall or spring end-of-course assessments beyond the normal conclusion of either semester.

Annual Schools: Schools that teach PLTW courses over the duration of the school year (40 weeks) may only administer the spring assessment to students during the testing period for that semester and must not administer the exam beyond the normal conclusion of the school year.
  • Because all students, teachers, and schools benefit from the national reliability of these tests, any school/teacher who feels the integrity of the end-of-course assessments has somehow been compromised should immediately contact the PLTW Coordinator of School Relations at 518.877.6491, Ext. 317.
