What Is Upper Division Status?

Upper division status is the start of a student's junior year of studies, typically the time when a student begins taking 300 level courses in the major. In order to be admitted to upper division, a student must have at least a 2.0 GPA on all lower division courses required by the degree program. The GPA will include repeated grades and that a student can repeat no more than five courses from the College in order to satisfy degree requirements. A student may not repeat a course a third time.

How Do I Apply For Upper Division Status?

The semester before taking upper division courses in your major (courses numbered 300 and above), a student must fill out an Upper Division Form and return the completed form to Student Services. To download the upper division form, click on the DOC link for your department's Upper Division Form. After completing the form, either bring it to Student Services, Room 1A00 of Swearingen Engineering Center, or fax it to Student Services at 803.777.0027.

What Is A Senior Check?

A senior check is a final review to ensure you have met the requirements for your degree. It is typically done in the second semester of your junior year before you register for senior year classes. To request a senior check, complete a Senior Check Form. Print the completed form and return it to Student Services, Room 1A00 in Swearingen Engineering Center. Please be certain to indicate what major you are, and what year curriculum you are in. We have active curriculums from 2001 through 2006. You are entitled to pursue the curriculum of the year you entered the university. If you wish to be considered for a newer curriculum, the senior check form will serve as official notice or you can email Student Services at sjarvie@sc.edu and request a newer curriculum. Remember, only the student can elect to follow a newer curriculum and that change must be in writing.
