Does the University require a minimum SAT/ACT for admission?

Admission is based on a combination of test scores and high-school credentials.

What are current expenses for tuition, room, board and fees?

Estimated average annual undergraduate expenses for 2006-2007 for tuition, room, meal plan, and books and supplies are $14,766 for in-state students and $27,194 for out-of-state students.

Does out-of-state tuition apply?

Yes. Students may be eligible for reduced tuition if they receive a general University scholarship of at least $500 per year.

Are jobs available on the University campus?

Yes. Carolina spends several million dollars per year on student employment. The campus is near the State House, banks, law firms, restaurants, and shops.

How much are books per year?

Average cost is approximately $838 per year, depending upon classes. Used books may be purchased for substantially reduced prices.

How do I apply for financial aid?

Ask your high-school guidance counselor for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available each December. You may also access the FAFSA online.

What academic scholarships are available?

The University offers a number of scholarship awards to incoming freshmen:

    • McNair Scholars/Finalist awards (nonresidents only): all applicants must apply for admission and submit a separate scholarship application by a specific deadline date
    • Carolina Scholars/Finalist awards (SC residents only): all applicants must apply for admission and submit a separate scholarship application by a specific deadline date
    • National Merit Finalist awards (residents and nonresidents): finalists accepted for admission must list USC Columbia as their first-choice school
    • Alumni Scholars award (residents and nonresidents): all applicants must apply for admission and submit a separate scholarship application by a specific deadline date
    • Trustees' Endowment Scholars award (residents and nonresidents): no separate scholarship application necessary
    • Valedictorian Scholars award (SC residents only): no separate scholarship application necessary
    • University Scholars award (residents and nonresidents): no separate scholarship application necessary
    • Alumni Legacy Scholars awards (residents and nonresidents): must apply for admission and submit a separate scholarship application by a specific deadline date.
